FARMERS' RIGHTS IN ITPGRFA:

The Benefit-Sharing Fund of the International Treaty

The Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture has awarded grants to the first projects under the Benefit-sharing Fund of the International Treaty for its first biennial cycle (2008-2009).

The Governing Body awards grants to organizations that work towards maintaining and increasing the use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, in accordance with the objectives of the Treaty. For the current period the Second Session of the Governing Body established the following priorities:

1) Information exchange, technology transfer and capacity-building,
2) Managing and conserving plant genetic resources on-farm,
3) The sustainable use of plant genetic resources.

The formal call for proposals was opened in the first week of December 2008 and a deadline of 15 January 2009 was set for submission of pre-proposals.

Some hundreds of pre-proposals were received within the specified time limit, from all FAO regions. The Bureau screened these according to the Eligibility Criteria established by the Governing Body, approved 64 pre-proposals, and requested the Secretary to call for project proposals in these cases, with a cut-off date of 18 March 2009.

In the end 11 projects were approved for funding. These projects are listed here.
