Draft provisional agenda for
the Third Session of the Governing Body
The
draft provisional agenda for
the Third Session of the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant
Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture has now been
published.
The Third Session of the Governing Body of the ITPGRFA
will be held in Tunis, Tunisia, 1-5 June 2009 and the implementation of Article
9 on Farmers' Rights is item 14 on the provisional agenda. The implementation
of Article 6 on the sustainable use of plant genetic resources, which is highly
relevant for the implementation of Farmers' Rights, is item 13 on the
provisional agenda.
At its Second Session the Governing Body adopted a
resolution on Farmers' Rights that states that Contracting Parties and
organizations are encouraged to submit views on and experiences from the
implementation of Farmers' Rights. To allow for a rich and fruitful discussion
of the implementation of Farmers' Rights at the Third Session of the Governing
Body it is hoped that all parties and organizations who would like to
contribute to the work of the Governing Body within this area will use this
opportunity to present their contributions. Those who have not already done so
should send their contributions to the Secretariat as soon as possible.
As is stated in the resolution on Farmers' Rights, the Governing Body
is committed to involve farmers' organizations in its work. It would therefore
be benficial to the discussion of item 14 and other items relevant to Farmers'
Rights if Contracting Parties and organizations that have the possibility to do
so, could invite farmer representatives to take part in their
delegations.
