THE FARMERS' RIGHTS
PROJECT:
Case studies on Farmers'
Rights
Case studies have been carried out in four
countries to map experiences with policies affecting Farmers' Rights as they
pertain to plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, and compile an
account of ideas on how to implement the Farmers' Rights provisions under the
International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. We
have - based on the response to the stakeholder survey - chosen one case
country from each of four continents: Peru, Ethiopia, India and
Norway.
Following from the provisions in the International Treaty on
Farmers' Rights, the country studies have been designed to comprise the
following topics:
The state of protection of farmers'
traditional knowledge relevant to plant genetic resources for food and
agriculture
The state of farmers' participation in the sharing of
benefits arising from the utilisation of plant genetic resources for food and
agriculture
The state
of farmers' participation in decision-making processes on matters related to
the conservation and sustainable use of agricultural plant genetic
resources
The state
of farmers' practice of saving, using, exchanging, and/or selling farm saved
seeds and propagating material, including legislation regulating such
practices
The state
of support to farmers who conserve plant genetic resources for food and
agriculture
Stakeholder perceptions on the concept of Farmers' Rights and on the
implementation of the provisions on Farmers' Rights under the International
Treaty in the country
Stakeholder perceptions on options for the realisation of Farmers'
Rights in the country
Overall
assessment of legislation pertaining to Farmers' Rights in the country
Assessment of the implementation of the legislation
