THE FARMERS' RIGHTS
PROJECT:
A side-event presenting
preliminary findings from the Farmers' Rights
project
Preliminary results from the Farmers' Rights
Project were presented at a side event during the First Session of the
Governing Body of the International Treaty in Madrid 12-16 June
2006.
The presentation was made by Regine Andersen, Director of the
Farmers' Rights Project. It was followed by an introduction on what Farmers'
Rights mean in practice by Wilhelmina R. Pelegrina, Executive Director of
Southeast Asia Regional Initiatives for Community Empowerment (SEARICE).
Annette von Lossau from the German GTZ made a short statement on the importance
of development co-operation for the realisation of Farmers' Rights. A panel
discussion with leading experts on Farmers' Rights followed. Contributors were
Prof. Carlos Correa from Argentina, Dr. S. Bala Ravi from India, Dr. Lim Eng
Siang from Malaysia, Wilhelmina R. Pelegrina from the Philippines and Regine
Andersen from Norway. The side event was chaired by Grethe Evjen from the
Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
The event, which took place
on 13 June, was organized in cooperation between the Fridtjof Nansen Institute
and the Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture and Food. It was attended by 60
participants and was very well received.
Following the side event,
Norway proposed in the Governing Body that Farmers' Rights be included in the
programme of work, and requested the Secretariat to prepare for the
consideration of this issue at the Second Session of the Governing Body. The
proposal was supported by Angola on behalf of the Africa Region, Cuba, India,
Pakistan and Yemen and was adopted with the condition that financial
contributions for the activities are provided.
