THE FARMERS' RIGHTS
PROJECT:
The Lusaka informal
international consultation process on Farmers'
Rights
Norway, with the support of a range of developing
countries, proposed at the First Session of the Governing Body of the
International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture that
Farmers' Rights be put on the Working Agenda of the Governing Body. Thus, the
Governing Body discussed Farmers' Rights at its Second Session, which was held
from 29 October to 2 November 2007.
Towards this end an informal
international consultation was organized in Lusaka, Zambia. The consultation
was co-hosted by Zambia Agricultural Research Institute, Ministry of
Agriculture and Food, Norway, and the Fridtjof Nansen Institute, Norway, and
resulted in a
report
on the prospects for implementing Farmers' Rights with recommendations to the
Governing Body (with summaries available also in
Spanish
and
French).
Based on the findings, Zambia and Norway submitted an
input paper on
Farmers' Rights to the Governing Body of the International Treaty for
consideration at its second session. Following from this process, a
resolution on Farmers'
Rights was adopted at the Second Session of the Governing Body (see also
Press Release from the Fridtjof
Nansen Institute).
