There are many options for the realization of Farmers’ Rights. In fact, a set of options (PDF, 3MB) has been developed on the initiative of the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture and will soon be published by the Treaty Secretariat following a resolution at the 9th Session of its Governing Body in September 2022. The options are presented in the box at the upper rights side of this webpage.

The inventory of best practices that has also been developed on the initiative of the Treaty’s Governing Body provides a rich account of examples and experiences with the different options and is continuously being updated. Some of the examples have been used to illustrate the options and can be found through the box at the upper rights side of this webpage.

Best practices from the realization of Farmers’ Rights have also been a topic for different research projects and we have collected, and continue collecting, the literature on best practices for you at this website. 

Whereas the options, inventory and research literature provide a comprehensive account of the possibilities for realizing Farmers’ Rights, it is also important to be mindful of the process that may be required to ensure the full realization of these rights. Thus, we will here focus on the process that may be required to get there. We offer a stepwise approach based on research carried out under the Farmers' Rights Project, which may help framing the process of realizing Farmers’ Rights. Within this framework different avenues are possible, dependent on needs and priorities.
